O \u00b4fatiamento\u00b4 foi feito com objetivos cient\u00edficos.<br \/>\nUm homem, Joseph Paul Jernigan, e uma mulher, desconhecida, resolveram doar seus corpos para o <em>The Visible Human Project<\/em>, um projeto conduzido pelo <em>U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/em> que tem objetivo de criar um banco de dados de imagens e informa\u00e7\u00f5es sobre o corpo humano.<br \/>\nJernigan foi condenado \u00e0 morte e ap\u00f3s execu\u00e7\u00e3o por inje\u00e7\u00e3o letal seu corpo foi congelado e fatiado em 1871 peda\u00e7os. Cada fatia foi fotografada analogica e digitalmente gerando mais de 65 GB de dados (inicialmente eram 15 GB).
