O veneno nos cogumelos varia bastante entre cada espécie; muitos tem moléculas pequenas do tipo peptídicas.
Um das moléculas pequenas e simples que compõem o veneno de um cogumelo, é a orelanina:
Essa molécula tem uma certa semelhança com o metil viologeno.
